Thoughts about music industry and consumption

Updated: Apr 20

As some might have noticed that I've pulled all my music from streaming services. Nemus anima music is now only available on YouTube, bandcamp and Nemus anima home page. I hope that at some point I have enough "fortune" to press Cd's.

As being one of those many independent artists who barely make any income from streams, it's not worth it. You don't even make as much that you pay for your yearly subscription to your distribution service. And we all know how little Spotify pays for artists. It's outrageous and unfair. We who put in all the hard work doesn't get anything out of it. And then these vultures stick their filthy fingers into the cake. And many small independent artist feel they're trapped, they don't have a choice.

And it's getting worse all the time. And people just don't care enough to quit and stop that toxic streaming culture to continue. And I'm not that desperate or in a need for fame to keep my music there just to be "discovered". I mainly compose music for myself, it's necessary, like breathing.

-CD's and how you found bands before streaming

As a huge music fan myself I constantly buy new Cd's into my collection. I love the physical form of music! It contains so much memories and feelings. Holding a Cd and reading a booklet is something else! Also you are more invested to the music compared to streaming. Call me old fashioned, I don't care!

"But how do you discover new bands?"

Well... Back in the day I walked into a record store, took a Cd from a shelf and looked at it, "these guys look pretty cool". Then I bought the album. It happened to be 'the best of Deicide', I've been fan ever since and I've bought all their albums, except few latest ones.

There also used to be Dvd's from labels including band music videos. That way I found Akercocke and Morbid angel. Awesome bands!

I'm just sharing my point of view, it doesn't mean that you have to agree with me. We all are different and that makes the world beautiful place and exciting. I'm just highly against all the injustice that is happening! Streaming has also affected how music is composed. Many artists are now putting all the hooks for the first 30 seconds of their songs because you don't get paid if the song is skipped before the first 30 seconds. And for those who do that, do you really dare to call yourself an artist?

If you are willing to compromise your art just to please the algorithm or whatever, you're not an artist, just another money hungry parasite.

I'd also love to hear people's personal view and experiences about this topic.
